Sigurjón Sighvatsson, the acclaimed producer behind David Lynch's Cannes Palme d'Or winner Wild at Heart and Julian Schnabel's Basquiat, is set to receive the Raimondo Rezzonico Award at the 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival. This honor, named after the festival's former president, is a testament to Sighvatsson's illustrious career in the film industry. In an exclusive interview with THR, Sighvatsson shared his thoughts on the festival circuit, the impact of AI on the film industry, and his perspective on Netflix's approach to content creation.
The Appeal of Locarno
Sighvatsson expressed his enthusiasm for returning to Locarno, praising the festival's unique curation and adventurous spirit. He highlights the festival's focus on showcasing a diverse range of films beyond the competition, setting it apart from other major film festivals. According to him, Locarno's flexibility and willingness to embrace unconventional projects have contributed to its enduring appeal.
"Locarno is not just about the competition," he says. "Everything has changed. When Wild at Heart won at Cannes, it was a significant platform for such an unusual film. Now, Cannes has evolved into something different. What are they catering to? What is their vision? Locarno, on the other hand, remains true to its adventurous spirit, and I appreciate that."
AI's Role in the Film Industry
When asked about AI's impact on the film industry, Sighvatsson offered a nuanced perspective. He acknowledges that AI has the potential to assist in various aspects of filmmaking, but he doubts its ability to revolutionize the art form. According to him, the essence of cinema lies in storytelling and the human experience, which AI may struggle to replicate.
"AI will help in many ways," he explains. "But I don't see AI movies transforming the industry. Movies are about people and stories. I can envision AI being utilized in specific projects. Christopher Nolan, for instance, chose not to use AI in the new Odyssey because he wanted to avoid any indication of its involvement. As for Moana, the Disney film, it feels like an AI creation, despite using real characters and CGI."
Sighvatsson draws a parallel between AI and powerful tools like the atom bomb, emphasizing the importance of responsible usage. He believes that many filmmakers will opt not to use AI, as they don't require it, while others will embrace it. However, he concludes that AI will have a more significant impact on television than on cinema.
Netflix's 'Closed System'
Sighvatsson's views on Netflix are critical, particularly regarding the streaming service's approach to content creation. He distinguishes between traditional films and what Netflix produces, referring to the latter as 'Netflix films.' According to him, Netflix's content lacks the depth and longevity of conventional films.
"Netflix calls its creations 'films,' but I don't," he states. "I call them Netflix films. They don't have the same depth of meaning as traditional films, and they aren't intended to have a long-lasting impact. Netflix's content is designed for a closed system, whereas my work, even music videos, is meant for an open system accessible to everyone."
The key difference, according to Sighvatsson, lies in distribution. Netflix's content is exclusively distributed through the Netflix platform, creating a self-contained ecosystem. This approach, he argues, leads to a simplification of storytelling, as Netflix prioritizes mass appeal over complexity.
Sighvatsson concludes that he is unlikely to produce a Netflix title, as his work aligns more with traditional film distribution. However, he acknowledges the positive impact of Netflix on the industry, particularly in providing opportunities for content creators from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
